WWE: 10 Forgotten Superstars That Should Have Won Gold

bam bam bigelow For every WWE champion, Intercontinental Champion or Tag Team Champion there are a ton of guys who never made the grade for a multitude of reasons. Most of these because they weren't popular enough, good enough or just weren't what the company needed at the time. On many occasions fans argue over who the greatest wrestlers were that never won any championship in WWE despite being incredibly deserving and so, to that argument, I submit the following list. It is in no particular order and I am happy to leave it to the reader to decide who amongst the 10 was most deserving and who was least, enjoy.

10. Jake Roberts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bizv78u9yRw Debuting in 1986 as a heel, Roberts was a huge babyface star by the close of 1987 and it is a source of considerable bemusement as to why he never won gold during his initial six year run with the company. The inventor and master of arguably the most popular finishing hold in wrestling history, the DDT and with a snake handler gimmick that popped audiences worldwide coupled with an unrivalled ability to cut promos and tremendous technical ability, Jake had it all. His programmes made money, he was a proven draw at the arenas and was one of the few men in that era who could literally talk you into the building. Perhaps the answer lies in the often troubled personal life of the popular star who, by his own admission, had severe drug and alcohol issues during this period which continue today. Though the WWE was rife with substance misuse issues during the eighties it is entirely plausible that Vince McMahon would not wish to risk a prominent title run on the shoulders of someone who could bring about severe negative publicity and could become unreliable. Of all the names on the list and all the superstars who never struck gold, this is the one that causes me the most personal sadness as I loved watching Jake Roberts more than anyone else in that period. Still , as Roberts put it himself when asked if he was sad at never having been the champion. 'I didn't need the belt, I was over enough without it'.
