WWE: 10 Reasons To Hate Raw and Smackdown

10. Backstage Lighting

So we see a couple of meaty guys having a slight quarrel in the backstage area. The scenes background is all corridors, equipment boxes and random staff milling about. I can almost here the producers saying €œYa know what we need right here? A purple light to really set the mood!€. My immediate reaction to this is; why is the corner of that corridor lit up in a weird colour? It€™s not at all uncommon to see the wrestlers immediate vicinity lit up in red and the corridor that bend away behind them lit up in blue. I call shenanigans! Go back 10 years and the backstage segments were done with the lighting the arena designers chose to pop into the ceiling and maybe an added light to highlight the characters. This gave it a grittier, realistic feeling that these guys have genuinely just met in the depths of the venue and are ready to shout down each other€™s throat. I understand the idea of course, that they are trying to create a more polished, produced look that will appear more pleasing to the eye to the viewers. I argue that it most likely takes away from the believability of the scene. Give the talent themselves some light to show their €œbest side€ or course but don€™t try and peddle the programme as a non scripted sports entertainment show when we see an amateurish attempt to add production value to a supposedly add hoc confrontation.
