WWE: 10 Most Shocking Unmaskings

2. Rey Mysterio Loses His Mask In WCW

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_iVCfi2S2w Rey Mysterio Jr. was one of the most popular wrestlers in WCW immediately upon his debut in 1996. His high flying ability was unmatched in professional wrestling. What's amazing is that he was that good even when he was 21 years old. Fast forward a couple of years later to SuperBrawl in 1999 as Mysterio teamed up with Konnan against Kevin Nash & Scott Hall. It was actually going to be Lex Luger with Nash, but he was injured. The stipulations were that if Nash & Hall lost then their friend/manager Elizabeth would have her head shaved. If Konnan and Rey lost, then Rey had to take his mask off. The match saw Hall and Nash cheat to win (thanks to Elizabeth's distraction), which meant that Mysterio had to take off his mask. When Mysterio took the mask off, the crowd reacted to it in a big way. It was a huge deal at the time because it was a sense of pride for his persona and we hadn't seen him without the mask. Was it smart for WCW to take off the mask? Not really. They should have kept it on because kids like wearing wrestling masks and as somebody that even bought a mask in Mexico as an adult, I can confirm that drunk guys like buying them too. Rey went to WWE in 2002. In the 12 years that he's been there, he's never shown his whole face. There have been instances where he had his mask ripped off by Chris Jericho where Rey would just cover it up with his hand. However, he has not fully removed the mask on WWE TV. The mask is good for Mysterio in terms of merchandise in WWE. It's smart to keep it on him. If you saw him in WCW, though, he competed for a couple years without the mask so it really isn't that much of a mystery if you know your history.
