WWE: 5 Best PPV Matches Of 2013

5. Cody Rhodes & Goldust vs. The Shield - Battle Ground 2013

If this match could be summed up in one word, it would be emotion. This wasn't a match that can be considered a mat classic or a wrestling clinic of any kind, but it told a story. Everybody watching the match, whether in the arena or at home was emotionally invested in the story unfolding in front of them-desperately rooting for the family looking for redemption against the enforcers of the corrupt Regime trying to take away their livelihood. From the splendid ovation the heroic trio got during their entrance, to the hug the brothers shared before the match, all the way to the energy Cody displayed during the finish of the match- this match oozed emotion through every second. And it was gold. (Pun intended) This match accomplished everything it set out to do while at the same time entertaining the hell out of everybody in attendance and those watching at home as well. Goldust gave the performance of his life and the crowd gave back in kind by supporting him fully throughout the match first with the "We Want Goldust" chants and then by cheering him on every time he was subdued by the Shield. Dusty Rhodes showed he was still one of the best ever at working a crowd and gave the crowd their money's worth, even whipping out the Bionic Elbow for good measure. The real success story of this match however was Cody who came off looking like nothing less than a main event caliber talent by the end of it. He had the crowd eating from the palm of his hand throughout the match and played the role of the heroic underdog with great panache and dexterity. This match may just have been his breakthrough moment and I'm sure that when it ended and the way the crowd reacted to him must have definitely made the powers backstage sit up and take notice. Also, taking nothing away from the Shield, I'd like to finally add that those guys really played their roles perfectly demonstrating once again that they're some of the best talents in the entire business and this match would not have been as special had the Shield not been as talented or as over as they are. Rating: 4 Stars.
