The WWE Hardcore Championship lived a short and chaotic life. Introduced by Vince McMahon in November 1998 at the peak of the Attitude Era, the decaying belt that was held together by duct tape was contested in no disqualification, falls count anywhere matches.

The HC title was a statement made by WWE in a time when edgy promotions like ECW were popularizing the use of excessive weaponry and bloodshed. But in contrast to ECW's ultra violence, the WWE Hardcore Championship became the source of cheap gimmicks and comic relief.

Trading barbed wire and flaming tables for backstage and household items, the HC strap adopted a unique stipulation that saw it defended 24/7, with spontaneous matches happening any place, at any time. Due to the rapid rate of title defences under the 24/7 rule, the title changed hands on some 240 occasions during its four year tenure.
