WWE: Rey Mysterio Expected To Sign A New Contract And Stay

It would appear as though Rey Mysterio going to remain an employee of World Wrestling Entertainment for the foreseeable future. There had been reports in recent months that with Mysterio's contract expiring later this year he might not re-sign with WWE due to lack of interest on their part and also because he might go work in Mexico. A new report from PWInsider suggests that Mysterio isn't going anywhere. The 39-year-old former WWE and World Champion has been added to the WWE Studios' Flintstones movie that will be released next year around WrestleMania 31, so that's a big reason why he'll be signing a contract extension soon. In a recent interview with SuperLuchas.net, Mysterio mentioned his desire to stay in WWE for the rest of his career: "I have nothing against the AAA but I do not plan to go there, I want to stay in the WWE because it's my home and where I want to end my career." It's good to know that he wants to stay and that WWE is expected to keep him around. Mysterio was also asked about retirement: "At the moment I have no plans to retire, I want to keep fighting so my retirement will be in the distant future. And once I retire I would love to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame." It's admirable that he wants to keep wrestling and doesn't have any plans to retire. Most wrestlers don't think about retiring until they're right at the end. If he feels he can keep going then he should do it. However, he should also listen to his doctors and not risk further damage to his knees if they're going to significantly hurt him 20-30 years down the line. It will be interesting to see if he ever gets a sustained push again. At this point in his career, it's likely that his biggest role will be as a guy that puts over younger talent while also potentially being a part of a tag team. When thinking about Mysterio, fans shouldn't focus on the last couple of years where he's been dealing with injuries. It happens to everybody. What we should be remembering is how revolutionary he was as the crusierweight centerpiece in WCW in the mid-90s. The best WCW match ever was arguably Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc 1997. Mysterio was just 22 years old. There are very few wrestlers ever that could have a match that good at that age. Maybe he peaked too early or he was not destined to have a 20 year career where he was injury free, but Mysterio is one of the best and most influential wrestlers ever. It's a great thing that he will stay in WWE, end his career there within a few years and one day walk into the WWE Hall of Fame.
