WWE: Rey Mysterio's Contract Expiring Soon - Major Doubts Over His Future

Rey Mysterio's WWE deal is nearing its expiry, with reportedly two months left to run on his current deal according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter. There are currently major doubts as to whether the deal will be renewed. The 39 year old star has been very injury prone in the last few years, missing large stretches of ring time. Considering he has one of the best downside guarantees in the company, Mysterio is a big liability on his current deal. He gets paid a lot of money for time spent healing at home. However, the star remains one of WWE's best merchandise sellers €” so WWE might be keen on retaining him despite his costly layoffs. WWE would usually be aggressively trying to re-sing a talent in this situation, but currently this is not the case. That will lead to speculation that WWE and Mysterio have decided he can't compete at this level anymore. Recent reports of yet another injury may have made the decision for Mysterio, with a chronically injured knee he perhaps just can't commit himself to another year of competing. With this being said, my personal suspicion is that WWE and Mysterio will let the current contract run out, before signing the star to a non-competing Legends deal. That would allow Mysterio to still appear in WWE and the company can still make money off his lucrative merchandise lines. It has became increasingly obvious that he can't wrestle anymore, so this seems like the best resolution for all concerned.
