WWE Royal Rumble 2013: Post PPV Reaction

I wonder if I can convince Virgin Media to refund me my £14.95 after last night's Royal Rumble proved to be a monumental waste of money? After what can only be described as a weak build up, the Royal Rumble finally hit out screens last night, leaving many WWE fans lost for words - and not in a good way. The show opened with the World Heavyweight Title match between Alberto Del Rio and The Big Show. This was nowhere near their previous match in terms of excitement and urgency, and would have been a much better fit for an episode of Smackdown, or better yet, a house show. After a sloppy back and forth, the match ended when Del Rio's BFF Ricardo Rodriguez taped Show's feet to the ropes preventing him from standing before the 10 count. Oh, and Bret Hart appeared and called Del Rio the Mexican Hitman. I don't like where this is going. Next up, the Tag Team Championship match, which I was certain would be the first title change of the night. Although this was far from a match of the night contender on any other show, given how poor this PPV actually was, Rhodes Scholars Vs Hell No was pretty decent. The match ended surprisingly with Daniel Bryan's Yes Lock. Do you remember when the Royal Rumble match was exciting? Someone should have reminded creative of that fact. OK, so there were some nice surprises in the form of Y2J Chris Jericho and Goldust, but other than that it was too fast and way too predictable. It was nice to see Godfather return for all of a minute. I must admit though I was extremely disappointed when his new shaven headed appearance didn't lead to a Papa Shango return later in the night. Bo "Son of IRS, Brother of Husky Harris" Dallas was impressive and likely has his first feud set up with Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett when he officially joins the main roster tonight. The Great Khali was just embarrassing; he can hardly walk and his offence is hideous. He's the type of giant McMahon would have pushed back in the 1980's and would still have sucked. It was interesting to hear the commentators say how good Rey Mysterio is at surviving. He's also really good at failing the Wellness Policy. What a hero. The final four was about as obvious as they come. It was good to see Ryback at least make it to the last two and for about 4 seconds it appeared he might actually win. How foolish of me. I forgot this is Cena's year. Spot of the night had to go to Kofi Kingston who survived elimination by piggy backing "fat man in pants" Tensai and then utilising JBL's chair to frog hop back to the ring apron. As awesome as that was, he was eliminated mere seconds later. Better luck next time Kofi. Honourable mention goes to Hell No for their comedic embrace. Once the Rumble was over (in what seemed like 10 minutes) it was time for the main event - The Rock vs CM Punk for the WWE title. The only word to describe this historic battle between The People's Champ and The Best in the World would involve a four letter expletive so instead I'll say huge anti-climax. OK, I won't argue with the outcome, although giving the title to a part-timer who has no contract beyond WrestleMania thus making the outcome of the main event pretty obvious even now seems stupid. It's more the way they went about it. After some entertaining spots and a massive cock up that could have injured both men, the arena was plunged into darkness. Any hopes that The Undertaker was back were quickly dashed as it became obvious that The Rock was being taken apart by The Shield. When the lights came up, Punk quickly pinned Rock and celebrated yet another victory. With around 10 minutes of the show left it was obvious to most that the match had not yet finished. Cue Vince McMahon. After almost stripping Punk of the belt, the Chairman of the Board instead restarted the match allowing Rocky to quickly turn the tables on Punk and drop The People's Elbow for the 3 count. Oh, how predictable. John Cena versus The Rock at WrestleMania 29, 'Once in a lifetime part 2'. I can't wait. When the most entertaining part of a 'Big Four' PPV is John Layfield's commentary, you know something ain't quite right. Let's hope WWE steps up their game as we now begin the countdown to WrestleMania.
