As the wrestling world is well aware by now, second generation star Cody Rhodes has asked for and received his release from World Wrestling Entertainment.

The move came as a bit of a surprise as Cody has always seemed like someone who would be a WWE "lifer" and remain with the company throughout the entirety of his wrestling career, but a dissatisfaction with his creative direction led to him requesting to be let go.

In a statement released by Rhodes, he expressed frustration with the writers and their lack of interest in anything involving his character, as well as not being allowed to drop the Stardust gimmick and return to being Cody Rhodes.

Back in March, Cody began dropping hints via social media that his time as Stardust was drawing to a close, a move the majority of fans felt was long overdue, especially following the passing of his father.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer recently noted that the plan was for Rhodes to abandon the gimmick around the time of WrestleMania 32 or the night after, but that was suddenly nixed.

"Vince McMahon and Triple H - and it was more Vince McMahon on this one, from what I was told - they decided they were not going to do it."

Meltzer also stated that despite the fact that he was granted his release, as of now he is still being held to the restrictions in his contract . He said the split was "not amicable" and that WWE is "kind of putting the screws to him" in terms of making it difficult for him to seek work elsewhere with another wrestling company.

The details of Cody's contract are not known so it's hard to say how long this could potentially last, and were Rhodes to seek legal counsel he would probably be successful in getting the restrictions lifted. Nevertheless, it's disappointing to see the situation sink to this level after the talented star put in a decade of hard work for the promotion.
