Christopher Nolan changed comic book movies as we know them with The Dark Knight, and the overall quality of his 2008 movie is a testament to his skills as a talented writer and director. Still, for my money, the best sequence in the entire movie is still the first, when we're introduced to Heath Ledger's infamous Joker via a bank robbery sequence. We don't even get to see all that much of him, but the execution is fabulous in every sense. The movie starts with a brilliant helicopter shot moving towards a skyscraper, when - boom! - the window breaks open and we realise we're playing witness to some kind of heist. The robbers? Men in clown masks, all of whom are discussing the man who hired them - the Joker. The way that this scene was written - as a simple bank robbery that allows us to learn just how clever our villain is with only a brief appearance at the end - is genius. The rest of the movie is great, but this is perhaps the most accomplished 5 minutes of Christopher Nolan's career.
