7 Movies That Never Beat Their Awesome Opening Scenes

1. D-Day - Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Don't get me wrong: Saving Private Ryan is one of Steven Spielberg's bonafide masterpieces, but you could argue that after the movie's incredible opening sequence - which depicts the beach landings at Normandy on D-Day with an unrelenting eye for detail and realism - the movie flirts with a form of Hollywood sentiment so well-associated with Spielberg's work, that it threatens its overall standing as a picture of serious means. Whatever you think, there's no denying that Ryan's opening 20 minutes remains unrivalled even today: shot with an authenticity achieved by shaky camera movements with sought to put us, the audience, right in the midst of one of the most harrowing battles to have ever taken place, Spielberg conjures up one of the most incredible battle sequences of all time. From the moment we're in the landing boat, he has us by the throats - and then the ramps come down and the German machine guns let rip and we can't believe what we're seeing. It's dizzyingly, revolutionary Hollywood filmmaking, and the scene itself is never bettered for the remainder of Spielberg's harrowing movie. Like this list? Which movies would you add?
