8 Actors To Replace The Avengers

By Shaun Munro /

After The Avengers hit big at the box office this time last year, it seemed like the future for the franchise was more secure than just about any other project in Hollywood. However, it has recently come to light that a few of the key components aren't necessary satisfied with their lot, meaning that the nuts and bolts that hold this massive undertaking together could begin to come loose. Firstly, we had Robert Downey Jr. announcing that he had to negotiate his new Iron Man contract, while Marvel executives said that they would be happy to proceed without him if need be. Then just this week, it was announced that Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson weren't too thrilled with the minimal paydays (reportedly as low as $500,000 for a film that grossed over $1.5bn), and as such both will be holding out for bigger deals to keep them in place for The Avengers 2. Thus, it is quite possible that these three roles, and even others, could end up being re-cast for Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though we hope it doesn't happen, here are 8 actors we think could step up to the plate if need be...

8. Ryan Phillippe (Captain America)

To me, this one is a slam-dunk. Other suggestions I'd read around the web included Aaron Eckhart, but a fantastic an actor though he is, he is simply too old to serve as a suitable replacement for Chris Evans. Ryan Phillippe, however, is young enough and similar enough in appearance that, you know what, it just might work. Phillippe isn't the busiest of actors, but he's delivered his fair share of memorable performances in recent years, namely Crash and Breach, which is more than can even be said for Evans himself. The role requires a certain boyishness in the face that the actor certainly has, but also an ability to look convincing when bulked up as well. Given that the man evidently keeps himself in tip-top shape, I don't think that's something we'd have to worry about. If anything, this could potentially be an upgrade (great though Evans is in the role).
