8 Directors Who Are Totally Under The Thumb

1. Tim Burton

You all knew he was coming, and even with the prolific efforts made by Kevin Smith and David Mamet to ensure their significant others get to join the party, Tim Burton is unrivalled in haphazardly casting his wife, Helena Bonham Carter, in just about everything he makes. Carter is a terrific actress, but what baffles about this artistic partnership is how Burton continually casts her in lousy roles. It all began when the two started dating after filming Burton's calamitous Planet of the Apes remake, and since then she has played in six of Burton's films: Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows. It's frustrating because going just by her performance as The Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland, Carter is definitely game for a work out, yet she's mostly been given blandly forgettable roles throughout her tenure with Burton, and nowadays, her appearance in a trailer for one of Burton's films mostly invites a groan or a knowing smirk. The sheer number of roles in which he has cast her gives an impression of Burton as lazy, something which is reflected in his tired, overdone aesthetic too. There's the feeling that Burton likely doesn't even cast his quirky lead female character, and just leaves the script on the bedside cabinet. This isn't Burton's first instance of this, though; his previous girlfriend and eventual fiancee, Lisa Marie, starred in five of Burton's films made during their relationship - Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, and Burton's 2000 short Stainboy. The director cannot help himself, it seems. But do you agree? Are there any other beleaguered filmmakers - male or female - who have had their arms twisted by the charms of the opposite sex?
