Right until the first reel of Up (which I nearly had to bail on because it effected me so much. My gal next to me was so wet, she looked like she had been for a swim), the most effective animated sequence in the history of film was Buzz Lightyear's revelation that he is not a space ranger, but actually a plastic play-thing for young boys in the original Toy Story.

It's a moment I think we can all relate. That single defining second of self-realisation when you find out what people have been telling you about yourself is actually true (you can't be a film star, you will never be a writer), followed by denial (I will do it, I will show them, it's not true), then the attempt to do it - followed by a dispiriting, thuddering fall to the ground. It hurts that you failed, but even more so that your whole life ambitions are over. Up of course blew it away with it's silent montage of losing a loved one, but I was reminded how effective this first Pixar movie was thanks to the new Blu-ray transfer.
