3. Bayonetta 2 - Inside Insidious

The Bayonetta series is another that prides itself on high-octane, absurd, unapologetically violent action. PlatinumGames’ challenging beat ‘em ups, as a result, are home to some of the most remarkable setpieces in gaming.

In Bayonetta 2, the titular Umbra Witch battles all manner of demons and angels alike. One of the most infamous and imposing of these is the towering Insidious, one of many such creatures. Bayonetta sees a number of these demons rather early in the game, but it isn’t until later that she gets to engage with one.

In Chapter VII, a dramatic encounter sees the player contending with an Insidious, which causes devastation with energy blasts from its eyes. The great beast is finally blinded and defeated, only for another to promptly swallow our heroine.

The stage set inside this Insidious has a soft, purply tinge, which is almost pleasant to look at. Soon enough, though, a pitched battle against the Masked Lumen begins and the backdrop becomes increasingly bloody.
