It would be easy to confuse Dark Souls' length with its difficulty, given that the game is notoriously difficult, and without question one of the hardest of this gaming generation. However, that's not really why it didn't know when to end; though I struggle with its insane difficulty, I embrace it as the challenge that it is. My problem with the game is how it artificially extends it length by forcing players to replay segments of the game they probably shouldn't have to. By half-way through Dead Souls, I'd become bored of killing the same enemies over and over again just to get back to a boss who had already finished me off a few times. To me, repetition does not equal difficulty; I was killed by a powerful enemy who had clever tactics, sure, and that is precisely why it doesn't need to make me play through the same sections again on top of that. It's already winning. The game can be hard on its own merits, but simply drags itself out by flinging this added challenge. My time is valuable; I don't want to spend it repeating sections ad nauseum. Gimme a freaking checkpoint, damnit!
