Rare enough that they managed to screw up again during the twilight era of the N64's life cycle! Though a disc-drive component for the N64 was announced before the console even hit stores, it wasn't released until the very end of the platform's lifespan, past the point at which people even really cared anymore, causing it sell a mere 15,000 units in Japan, and as a result not even being released in most other markets. It's a shame because if Nintendo had shown a bit more forward-thinking, this could have been a massive success for them. After all, wasn't the lamest thing about the N64 that it couldn't handle FMV sequences and high-quality audio like the PS1? Those ports of FMV-heavy games like Resident Evil were absolutely dreadful. All in all, it was an initially missed and then failed opportunity for Nintendo.
