GTA V: 10 Reasons Why We Need a New Hero

By Stuart W. Bedford /

1. A New Character with a New Story

Ultimately, we experienced Claude€™s story when we played GTA III, just like we experienced Tommy Vercetti€™s in Vice City, CJ€™s in San Andreas and Niko€™s in GTA IV. These characters gave me some of the greatest gaming experiences of my life to date and for that I thank each and every one of them. But they€™re stories I€™ve consumed, digested, meditated upon and ultimately feel are finished, complete in the way that R* clearly intended them to be. Each new game represents an absolute, a complete experience. But this is a concept that would be shattered by the inclusion of a returning protagonist in GTA V. While getting to play again as Claude or Tommy Vercetti would be a temporary validation for returning fans, I can€™t help but feel that this isn€™t why we continue to buy GTA in our droves. We buy it to meet a new character, to have the story telling process begin again and to consume another complete R* experience, not pt. II of an old one. After all, in a market place where the sequel is king it€™s refreshing to go into a game knowing that even though a recognisable title is on the box, we€™re about to meet characters we€™ve never seen before. So, with that in mind, I really do hope that GTA V offers a new protagonist; if it doesn€™t then doesn€™t that hint that maybe R* are running out of ideas for the series? Anything you'd like to add?
