Vegard Forren was a transfer target for Liverpool in the transfer window, but ended up joining Premier League rivals Southampton instead. The Norwegian centre-back was even offered a trial at Anfield by Brendan Rodgers but in the end the former Molde defender completed his £4 million deal to St Mary's - after some persuasion of course from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the former Manchester United striker, just to add salt to the wounds. With centre-back Sebastian Coates failing to impress since his move from Nacional in 2011, and Jamie Carragher nearing retirement, Liverpool could have used a new centre-half but didn't get one.
