Premier League: 10 Contenders To Win PFA Player Of The Year Award

By Callum Wiggins /

9. Eden Hazard

It has been an impressive first season in the Premier League for Eden Hazard. When I saw him play for Belgium against England in a friendly before Euro 2012, I couldn't really see what had so convinced Chelsea to spend a rumoured £32 million on him. Of course he lit up Ligue 1, but could that translate to the rigors of the English top flight? Well, the pink slip with Roberto Di Matteo's name on it doesn't seem to suggest he had in any way benefitted the outgoing European Champions. But, given time, Hazard has been able to join Fellaini in the ranks of Belgians that are starring in England. His tricks and flicks are all very well and good, and Hazard has substance that emerges from the style. His creativity above all else has been a boon for the Chelsea side this year, as he has provided fourteen assists in the Premier League this season. Imagine how many he would have if he was passing to strikers that could actually score goals? Hazard also chips in with his fair share of finishes as well as passes, scoring a further eight goals for the Blues in their push towards Champions League qualification. Does he merit any individual awards this season? Not really. He is an energetic and talented playmaker, but has to often been seen drifting in and out of the matches, and is probably being inhibited by the inconsistency of his side's performances. This ranking is more an opportunity to think for the future, as the potential demonstrated in his debut season with Chelsea only bodes well for his future in winning both individual honours and team medals.
