Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle: 8 Key Things We Learned

By Simon Gallagher /

6. Sunderland Need To Make More Chances

Despite possessing almost £30million in newly-bought attacking options this summer, Sunderland have scored just six times - five from new striker Steven Fletcher, and now one from the unwitting head of unlucky Newcastle striker Demba Ba. Yesterday, despite having Fletcher, Adam Johnson, Sessegnon and James McClean on the pitch for the majority of the game, Sunderland's threat was all but absent, with a couple of half-chances and very little else to shout about. Too often the wingers failed to take on the Newcastle full-backs, who both had relatively easy days, and the limited service that came in to Steven Fletcher was either too poor to reach him, or was easily dealt with by the exceptional Fabricio Coloccini. If Sunderland are to get themselves up the league, they need more creativity and strength in the middle of the park, and they need their wingers to be running at full-backs, hitting the by-line and getting Fletcher the service he needs to score goals. And they could do with playing Louis Saha, who showed more in the brief time he had on the pitch yesterday than any of his attacking team-mates managed in the rest of the game.
