Have you ever sat down on the living room sofa, flicked open the TV guide for the evening and complained "there's nothing good on", only to venture back upstairs, and stare longingly at your dust-covered DVD collection? If you're like me and have a library of old TV shows from Black Adder to Scrubs sitting on your shelves, and wish they were they were still running, but know they never will grace our silver screen again, then this list is for you. If you think Misfits is rubbish and long for the IT Crowd, or think Bernard Black is a better anti-hero than Dexter, then you may enjoy what the following pages contain. Here, we run through 5 TV shows that are long gone from our television sets that we wish would return for a new series (but sadly, never will).
5. My Name Is Earl
In the Greg Garcia-created My Name Is Earl, viewers follow lovable loser Earl (Jason Lee) and his slow-witted brother Randy (Ethan Suplee) as they try to right all the wrongs Earl has committed throughout his life. You see, Earl is a new man. He lived a life of petty crime and misdemeanours but after being rendered comatose following a car accident, he now has a new outlook on life and, clinging to the idea of karma, believes it's time to pay back his community for all his misdeeds. The show was well received by critics and audiences alike and currently holds a 77% "generally favourable" rating over on Metacritic. That's why it was such a surprise that it only lasted for four seasons. Worse still, the abrupt nature of its cancellation in 2009 and lack of any sort of resolution angered many of the show's loyal fans. My Name Is Earl ended on a cliff-hanger after series 4 with viewers being teased as to the paternity of Earl Jnr. and regrettably, we never found out who the real father was. There have been talks of a film outing in an attempt to tie up the loose ends but whether this actually happens or not remains to be seen.
