3. Kurt Angle Vs Samoa Joe - Lockdown 2008

There are hard hitting matches, and then there's Samoa Joe winning his first ever TNA World Championship from Kurt Angle at Lockdown. The Samoan Submission machine, despite being one of the most dominant forces in the promotion, was still yet to win the big one. Standing in the way was his old foe, the history between the two lending this match a big-fight feel so often missing in TNA. This one was ripped straight from the UFC's playbook, with Joe and Angle decked out more like mixed martial arts fighters than pro wrestlers, a cage surrounding the ring, and even a real MMA athlete - Marcus Davis - in attendance to congratulate the winner. The match was fittingly very stiff, especially its opening few exchanges. The pair traded realistic-looking strikes and submission attempts, before gradually switching to a more familiar style as the match wore on. The ending sequence was full of drama and even a little ingenuity, with Angle escaping a coquina clutch by grabbing the referee's shirt and dragging himself closer to the ropes. A clean finish capped off a match which truly deserved one, as Joe nailed the muscle buster and won his first world title in the middle of the ring.
