8 Ups & 4 Downs From IMPACT Wrestling (10 June)
2. How To Ruin A Match
The Kimber Lee vs. Tasha Steelz bout was fine. Just. What ruined it slightly, though, was Josh Mathews’ commentary work.
Again filling in for Matt Striker, Mathews spent the entire match spilling random nonsense from his mouth. He spoke about the new IMPACT trading cards and Micro Brawlers, before asking D-Lo Brown to talk about himself for a bit, and then cutting him off as if D-lo was the problem rather than himself.
There’s no denying how much of an asset he is behind the scenes, but this is where he must be kept. When Josh and Madison Rayne were replaced as IMPACT’s commentary team by Striker and Brown in January, it was like a literal breath of fresh air. They added a new perspective to IMPACT programming that was needed in the wake of Mathews spending entire shows hyping up merchandise and making needless comments.
Yes, there is a time and place to plug merch, but it’s not during a match, unless it’s merch for wrestlers actually in said match. Genuinely, considering Josh has been commentating for over a decade, how is he still this bad at his job?
