As the 25th annual Summerslam is just over one week away, now is a good time to look back at the best ones over the years. Between an interesting WWE Championship triple threat match coming in the midst of a supposed CM Punk heel turn and the blockbuster battle between Brock Lesnar and Triple H, this edition of the PPV could be one of the best yet. Perhaps the lack of storylines outside of those two feuds will work against this Summerslam being placed alongside these five editions. But which five Summerslams will the WWE want it to be compared to?
5. Summerslam 1992
Perhaps in the greatest match in WWE history, the British Bulldog defeated his brother-in-law Bret Hart. The undercard was not particularly great, apart from an entertaining match between Shawn Michaels and Rick Martel. The WWF Championship match between Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage was eventually outshone by the Hart/Bulldog classic, but their encounter, which came a year after their wonderful WrestleMania match, was exceptional. It should be noted that both men put in excellent performances, not just the Macho Man. But the best was saved for last. In front of the largest certified crowd in WWE history (80,000) the British Bulldog electrified Wembley by winning Bret Harts Intercontinental Championship. Its a pure classic: two styles of wrestling that combined perfectly in the ring, a lively crowd and many, many 2 ¾ counts. Probably the best match ever competed at a Summerslam PPV.
