The WWF was in the middle of the infamous, and ultimately disappointing, Invasion angle when Austin turned his back on his compatriots. At the Invasion PPV, Austin had turned on Undertaker, Kane, Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle, as he sided with the Alliance group. It was a huge embarrassment for the WWF as Austin took the Championship with him. Austin commented that he had turned against the WWF because he felt that McMahon was grooming Angle for his spot. The two went back-and-forth for several weeks as they prepared for their showdown at Summerslam. Although the Invasion angle and the lead up to the bout was a huge disappointment, the match itself was a classic. Austin seemed to be the dominant figure during the match but Angle made several incredible kick-outs. The Texas Rattlesnake, angered by Angles resilience and the increasing feeling that the gold medallist was destined to take the WWF Championship, started to attack the referee and his replacements, until the WCW head referee Nick Patrick emerged and DQd Austin, so he'd retain the gold. It was a shame that the match had ended in such shambles but the rest of the bout had been exceptional.
