For those not familiar with the phenomenon that is fan fiction, it’s basically when fans of a certain book, TV show or movie gather in a dark corner of the internet and re-write or add to existing canon through their own stories.

Apparently, it’s been going on since the 1960s within the Star Trek fandom but the best known example is probably E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey which started out life as a Twilight fan fiction before becoming the bored housewife’s reading material of choice.

Like Fifty Shades of Grey, many fan fictions feature A LOT of sex and virtually any subject is fair game – even the pure, innocent characters of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. How could the magical, whimsical world of Harry Potter possibly be turned into smut? Well, you’d be surprised.

Some of the Harry Potter fan fictions featured here take place purely within the Harry Potter universe while others are crossover efforts that mingle Hogwarts characters with other pop culture icons, and though not all are explicitly sexual the vast majority are. You have been warned.

One last friendly reminder: nothing – absolutely nothing – is sacred in the world of fan fiction, so prepare to be appalled. Very appalled.

12. My Immortal

Undoubtedly the most infamous of all Harry Potter fan fictions, My Immortal (named after a song by lame goth band Evanescence) first appeared on the internet back in 2006 and was a very loose reinterpretation of the books told from the perspective of its teen goth protagonist Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way (yes, really) totalling forty-four chapters and over twenty thousand words in length.

Known for its many spelling mistakes, ridiculous plot and frequent references to all things stereotypically noughties ‘goffik’ – fishnet tights, Good Charlotte, self-harm and the like – it’s gone down in fan fiction history as one of the worst ever written. But it’s so unintentionally funny that it joins the ranks of ‘things that are so bad they’re actually good’ just like dad jokes, The Room and pot noodles before it.

In fact, it’s so good-bad that it was even adapted into a web series for the viewing pleasure of Harry Potter fans the world over – a clear testament to its lasting, if dubious, legacy.
