10 Best (Canon) Star Wars Novels Every Fan Must Read

9. Bloodline

Star Wars Thrawn Treason
Del Rey

There are many things fans lament the loss of now that the old EU is no longer canon, but one of the biggest ones (besides Mara Jade) is the life of Leia Organa after the events of the original trilogy. Well, to make up for that, in came Claudia Gray to give us Star Wars: Bloodline. AKA, proof that the political stuff in the prequels COULD have been interesting if they'd done it right.

The story takes place six years prior to The Force Awakens, and centres around Leia Organa trying to get the New Republic senate to play nice with each other. But after decades of gridlock, infighting, and general frustration, Leia has begun to lose sight of the point of it all. Especially when Imperial loyalists start kicking up a fuss, and she starts to fear that several of her New Republic colleagues might be on their side.

Leia will have to hold the senate together with her bare hands, keep them from repeating the same mistakes that resulted in the Empire, and put her faith in her friend, Vice Admiral Holdo, if she is to have any hope for this fledgling democracy to survive.

It's a complex, fascinating look into galactic politics that makes you wonder why none of the prequel films could make this work.
