10 Shocking Comic Book Movie Moments That Came Out Of Nowhere

8. Ares' Identity

Ares, the Greek God of War. Not a figure that many would choose David Thewlis to play and yet, in 2017's Wonder Woman, the actor was the one to chosen to do so.

To be fair, Thewlis' character is introduced as a British politician advocating for an armistice with Germany, so he was certainly a good choice in terms of being unassuming. Every bit of evidence in the film pointed towards war-hungry German general Ludendorff being Ares - as of course a being that feeds off conflict would try and prolong the First World War; even Diana herself was shocked to discover that he was just a guy.

The reveal was definitely surprising, but was it as effective as having the revelation be that humans are just horrible? Probably not.
