Now you might be asking yourself what’s with the asterisk? The answer to that dear reader is because this is the film most likely to adapt very little from the comics beyond the basic principle. And it's easy to say that with confidence because the writer and director of the movie is a one James Gunn.

While Guardians of the Galaxy used pretty accurate designs from the comics, the film is otherwise an almost entirely original piece by Gunn. Nicole Perlman was originally set to write the film, and even chose to base her original script on Dan Abnett’s popular run.

But that version was dropped after Gunn was hired to direct and felt the script didn’t work right with what he wanted the film to be, and look at how successful that film turned out to be.

Warner Bros. and DC would’ve been fools to hire Gunn to make anything other than a James Gunn movie. Gunn proved with the first and second Guardians films that he can make films that pay respect to the source material, while still be original and entertaining.

Thankfully Gunn has confirmed numerous times that Warner Bros. and DC gave him near complete and total creative control to make the movie he wants to make, so expect The Suicide Squad to take the basic idea of the squad and just go nuts with it. And if Gunn’s claims that this is his best film yet are true, we’re in for one hell a treat.
