The DC franchise has given us a countless plethora of superheroes ranging from god-like beings hailing from other worlds, to meta-humans who have attained their powers by being on the wrong end of some kind of accident. Standing out from the crowd is the self trained, highly motivated Dark Knight and vigilante, the Batman.
Of course, inheriting your parents' business and a giant fortune would help quite substantially in maintaining a crimefighting career, but there's still no underestimating the Caped Crusader's ability.
Batman is a vigilante hero that gives hope to many people growing up with his stories by presenting the image that anybody can make a difference. Bruce Wayne is a human being who worked for everything he became (again, minus the financial fortune), which reinforces the idea of the 'American Dream' that anyone can be who they want to be if they work hard enough for it. It's a nice message to inspire people - especially young readers - only when you disregard the accompanying danger of being a vigilante in Gotham.
