10 Raunchy Movies That Were Basically Just Porn

1. Caligula (1979)

cal Being a biopic of probably the most depraved man in history, Caligula was bound to portray graphic sexuality. But throw in Italian smut director Tinto Brass into the mix along with Bob Guccione - the man behind Penthouse magazine - and you get the porniest porn film imaginable. With a stellar cast - Sir John Gielgud, Peter O'Toole, Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren - and a script by literary giant - Gore Vidal - the film could have been a masterpiece like the BBC TV series hit - I Claudius. That is what everyone involved in the film wanted. Yes it was sexy and daring but wait... It was a pile of crap at the same time. Poorly directed and acted, Caligula was a mess. Bob Guccione gets the bright idea to shoot about 8 minutes of unsimulated sex and splice it into the film. So we have an unmitigated porno on our hands now which features explicit straight, lesbian and gay sex, orgies, depravity and debauchery. There should have been less emphasis on the sex because it swamps the film's storyline - the life of Caligula - which is actually an interesting story and a great idea for a film. Because of all the sex, Caligula is watched as a piece of curious porn, rather than the story of one of the wickedest men in History.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
