9. The Batman Opens A Discussion On Mental Illness

It would be a surprise to precisely nobody to find out that Batman suffers from some kind of mental illness. After all, his chosen coping mechanism for dealing with his parents unfortunate and untimely death is to run around seeking vengeance whilst dressed as a bat.

In the big, bold year of 2022, the conversation around mental health is more open than ever – and it is good to see director Matt Reeves starting to more explicitly breach the topic in the Batman story.

The biggest direct nod comes as in the film we learn that Bruce Wayne’s mother, Martha, spent some time in Arkham because of her mental health issues. It is refreshing to see some direct reference to the realm of mental illness, as the more we talk about in both inside the media and out, the easier it gets to discuss and approach the topic as a whole.

Adding this element to Batman’s character also helps to round him out, make him more interesting and complete, as it helps build him into a multi-layered being. He’s not just a rich guy in a suit, he’s a human being with demons in his head that he is battling just like the rest of us.
