10 Worst Movies Of 2013 (So Far)

6. Safe Haven

Safe Haven Safe Haven is, for most of its run-time, a perfectly rote adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, well-shot and featuring decent chemistry between its leads (Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough) even if the story is as sickeningly saccharine as you'd expect. As far as schmaltz filmmakers go, Lasse Hallström is a pretty reliable director, though here he completely bungles it, even if this is almost entirely a fault of Sparks' source material, which delivers a head-smackingly inane - if also hilarious - plot twist in its final moments. SPOILER WARNING (as if you're going to care). It all comes down to the character played by Cobie Smulders; she plays Hough's friend who disappears in and out of the picture throughout, and as we find out at the end, she is the ghost of Duhamel's dead wife mentioned throughout the film, encouraging Hough to start a new life with him so he can truly move on from her death. This twist is revealed in the final two minutes of the film, and prompted a round of uproarious laughter at the press screening I attended. Without question, this is the most ham-fisted plot twist in recent cinema history.
