At the start of the 21st century, only Titanic had grossed more than a billion dollars. At the end of the 2000s, that number had risen to five. Now, a staggering 46 films are part of the billion-dollar club.
With the summer season on hold for obvious reasons, it's a great time to look back at all the billion-dollar movies and it's wonderful to see that most of the films that have achieved this stunning level of success largely deserved it.
Yes, the club has some duds - Avatar, The Lion King (2019), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Transformers 3 and 4, and Alice in Wonderland, looking at all of you. Additionally, a fair few of them are pretty mediocre, such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Spider-Man: Far from Home, Captain Marvel, The Phantom Menace and An Unexpected Journey, but for the most part the billion-dollar club represents the best of contemporary Hollywood film-making.
In these uncertain times, joyous viewing experiences like these couldn't be more welcome. If you haven't seen some of these movies yet, give them a watch. You won't regret it.
