6. Anatoly Onoprienko

During the Cold War, the Soviet government insisted that there were no serial killers in the USSR -- that kind of depravity was a result of capitalist Western society. This denial allowed Anatoly Onoprienko, also known as the Beast of Ukraine, to evade capture for seven years, from 1989 to 1996. During that time, he killed 52 people. His pattern was to target an isolated house and kill the family that lived inside, first the adult male, then the spouse, and finally the children. Onoprienko would also frequently burn down the homes afterwards, in an attempt to cover his tracks. Always thorough, the Soviet police tortured a man they believed responsible for the murders, who eventually died from his wounds seventeen days before Onoprienko was captured.
