Justice League: Steppenwolf Almost Looked A Lot Scarier (And Better)

Here's what you could have won...

Steppenwolf Concept

When you look back at the various failings of Justice League, some of them will ultimately be classed as forgivable in hindsight because of the ludicrous context of the production. With the studio pressuring Joss Whedon to get a movie out, even Superman's ridiculous moustache issue can be forgiven somewhat because of the time constraints, but there's one thing nobody should ever let go.

Nobody should ever let Warner Bros, Joss Whedon or Zack Snyder forget that they looked at the final version of Steppenwolf and thought it was a good decision. Not even with the hindsight of the disastrous of Incubus in Suicide Squad. They literally learned nothing and we ended up with a villain who looked not only poorly rendered with CGI but also poorly designed.

And annoyingly, it could have been a lot better - at least in terms of the character's design - as concept artist Jared S. Marantz has posted some of the designs he put together for the villain to his Instagram account.

Now, try and say that's not a whole universe better than the mangled goat man we got in the movie... It looks altogether more alien, more menacing and wholly less ridiculous. Actually having him have horns is also a better approach than putting him in a silly-looking hat.

We've also seen another concept design for the character, which, once more, looks a lot better than the naff one that made it into the final film...

Why it was ultimately decided to go with a less alien look is anyone's guess (perhaps it had something to do with Doomsday's poor reception in Batman v Superman?), but with these concept designs out in the wild, it's clear it wasn't the right decision.
