General Zod Is The Villain - Or Is He?
With Michael Shannon cast as the iconic General Zod of the Kryptonian Army, speculation has been rampant that this character will be the villain of the film. Recently, however, Shannon has revealed that his character's motives are not of evil intent, but rather for the greater good of the Kryptonian race. In recent years, the various comic books have re-established Zod as a central figure in Superman's life, initially to lead the Kryptonians who have been freed from the Bottle City of Kandor, but ultimately coming into odds with Kal-El who protects the people of planet Earth. To be sure, Zod will certainly be opposite The Man of Steel by the film's climax. Recent trailer footage suggests he will, in fact, even visit Smallville and The Kent Farm, and go on to wreak havoc and destruction across Metropolis. However, the path Zod takes to get to that breaking point will be very interesting, as he will initially seek Superman's help in his efforts to re-establish Krypton, which is an act that The Man of Steel will certainly call into question.
