The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced their list of nominations for the 91st Academy Awards, which will be presented on February 24.

And it's probably fair to call this year's slate of nominees a hugely mixed bag, right?

Every year without fail there's a ton of online hand-wringing about movies being "snubbed" while others are needlessly rewarded, but the 2019 Academy Awards really is set to be one of the most milquetoast and disappointingly dull ceremonies of recent times.

With surely the least inspired Best Picture field in years and numerous broad-playing films receiving an over-abundance of nominations across the board, it's clear where the unimaginative passions of the voter base are currently resting.

The race certainly isn't over, and it's still possible that one of four or five movies ends up scooping the Best Picture Oscar, but it's probably worth preparing yourself for the likelihood that this year's show is going to be incredibly safe - and incredibly white - where major awards are concerned...
