3. Kirk And Picard Meet

The Kirk V Picard debate raged throughout the run of the Next Generation. Which of the two was the better Captain, was heavily debated by the then new and old school Star Trek fans? In reality, what everyone wanted was the dream meeting of the two Captains of the USS Enterprise. Spock, McCoy and Scotty had had crossover episodes in The Next generation but the one everyone wanted to see was James T. Kirk. That moment finally arrived once the Next Generation made the jump to feature films in 1994. In the first TNG movie, Star Trek: Generations, Kirk and Picard were going to meet. Moments like this have to be handled well, they have to be spectacular and more than satisfy the years of expectation that fans have built. Unfortunately, Star Trek: Generations failed on all those levels. What we wanted to see was Kirk and Picard working together to take down a common adversary. It was going to have to involve some sort of time travel plot device, but it didnt matter how they met, it was all about what they did once they met. Kirk may have had his pick of women but the one lady that really mattered was the Enterprise and the Bridge is where the action should have taken place. Once Picard and Kirk had met, the ending should have been a three-way that involved the Enterprise in some form. Instead, we got a rushed meeting inside the Nexus, the energy ribbon that made all dreams come true if you were prepared to live your life in a fantasy land. There was a little banter between the two but nothing like what fans had been waiting to see. The action then shifted to Veridian 3 where the two Captains battled Malcolm MacDowell to save a planet full of people we had no connection to. There was no Enterprise, no spectacular battle and no nerdgasm to release the 7 year build-up. A total missed opportunity but not the only one in Star Trek: Generations
