Avengers: Endgame has been released, bringing the 22-movie Infinity Saga to a close and ending 11 years' worth of movies.

Game of Thrones Season 8 has wrapped, concluding the biggest show of the decade.

With those two out of the way, Star Wars is the last pop-culture monolith still to come - and, in a sense, end - in 2019. The Rise of Skywalker will be released in December, and if Endgame tying a bow on just over a decade of stories seemed a difficult challenge, then spare a thought for J.J. Abrams. His Episode IX will bring to a close the entire Skywalker Saga, spanning nine movies (and two closely-related spin-offs) from over 42 years.

As is Abrams' way, The Rise of Skywalker is still very secretive. So far, we've had one teaser trailer, which setup a number of intriguing plot points - including the return, somehow, of Emperor Palpatine - but didn't give much away in terms of concrete information. As is customary for a new Star Wars film, then, we've got a new Vanity Fair cover story to help shed a little more light on the film, without going too far into spoiler territory, and bring some stunning new photos from Annie Leibovitz too.
