The Avengers: 8 Famous Actors Who Were Almost Assembled

2. Sam Rockwell Came Very Close To Playing Iron Man

Sam Rockwell? But didn't he play the villain in Iron Man 2? He was Justin Hammer, remember? I do remember, dear reader, but consider for a second that - once upon a time - Sam Rockwell made the short list for actors in the running to play Tony Stark. And despite the fact that nobody is ever going to beat out Robert Downey Jr. for "best portrayal of Iron Man in the whole wide word ever," I think Rockwell might've done an equally pleasing job. Hear me out. Remember that both of these actors are infused with a manic, tic-based acting style - it's all charisma and consciously hammy on occassion, and it ultimately works great. Rockwell has a sort of vulnerability about him that Downey Jr. does not, though, and I think that could have been used to something of an advantage. Sure, it would have made for an entirely different (though still admirably quippy) Tony Stark, though I don't doubt for a second that fans would've embraced Rockwell's performance. Had Downey Jr. never existed, the man would've undoubtably owned this role. Now go out and buy a Sam Rockwell movie: he's awesome.
