Velvet Buzzsaw Review: 4 Ups & 5 Downs
1. The Fluid, Unpredictable Tone
Probably the best thing Velvet Buzzsaw has going for it outside of its performances is its tone, which is wildly unpredictable and totally compliments Gilroy's bats***-crazy vision.
For most movies a wavering, inconsistent tone doesn't work and creates unease, but here that's exactly the desired response, with Gilroy fleeting effortlessly between satire and campy horror to disarming, discomforting effect.
It's a shame the horror elements aren't more blood-curdlingly effective, yes, but the film's ever-shifting tenor at least makes it tough for audiences to get too relaxed or, indeed, too bored.
For its ambition in this regard the film is to be commended, even if it isn't a home-run like we were all hoping for.
