2. The Rock Solid Supporting Cast

Whatever you think of the film, you can't take away from the fact that Gilroy has amassed quite the talented cast for his tale.

The easy standouts from the supporting cast are Rene Russo (as punk rocker-turned-art distributor Rhodora Haze), Toni Collette (excitable "art adviser" Gretchen), Brit actress Zawe Ashton (Josephina, who first discovers the neglected art), and Daveed Diggs (rising artist Damrish).

Russo's patter with Gllyenhaal is especially entertaining, while Collette is arguably underused but certainly makes the most of her screen time. Together the ensemble elevates the material as much as they can, even if they're all deserving of something a little meatier.

Ultimately the ensemble cast is all in the service of elevating Gyllenhaal's work, and that they do with a sure enthusiasm.
