10 Greatest Downloadable Games Of 2012

8. Hotline Miami

Hotline Miami is brutally good, literally. And you will die. A lot. A 2D top down action game, Hotline Miami offers more gore per stage than any of the other games on this list offer throughout the entire games and whilst the "Drive" inspired, hyper violence, is the most talked about element of the game, at it's heart its an incredibly diverting, enjoyable distraction based on the simple concept of kill everyone, as quickly as possible, without being seen. What makes the game particularly brutal is that unlike most other single player games your health is the same as your enemies, which leads the aforementioned multiple deaths. It's the exact opposite of permadeath but that's what makes the game addictive, there is no penalty to death, simply press "R" and try again. Enemy starting positions stay the same, enemies walk patterns which are fairly similar each time, but the AI is such that the movements aren't identical each time. It somehow manages to encourage and punish trial and error at the same time. If this game had hyper-realistic graphics and a darker visual style it would never have never seen the light of day, the decision to set it in a bright, over-the-top, 198os setting not only means the game actually got released but in fact adds to experience.
