6. Deadlight

Deadlight is an atmospheric, side scrolling, zombie platformer. It drew parallels to Limbo upon release due to the similar art style and gameplay mechanics but the similarities are minor. Where Limbo pushes the dark, minimalist atmosphere to the limit, Deadlight takes the silhouetted protagonist and places him against the back drop of a city ravaged by a "shadow" apocalypse. The game follows the familiar trope of a man separated from his wife and child and chronicles his attempts to find them across a decimated Seattle in 1986. By setting the game in the 80s Tequila Works immediately eliminates the question around why no-one ever seems to have access to a mobile phone or the internet during the zombie apocalypse (or when trying to source items for the buying task in the Apprentice). No part of the game is truly revolutionary but the gameplay, setting, and characterisation are all solid (although not spectacular) but the idea of an action platformer set during the zombie apocalypse is novel and, much like Limbo, offers a very adult take on the classic platformer genre.
