10 Most Insanely Violent Video Games Ever Made

As much as I love games with thoughtful, intricate storylines, I can't deny that I also like a bit of senseless gore on occasion, too. It taps into one of our basic urges as gamers, to cause the sort of destruction we cannot in real life, at least without getting arrested. Psychologists would say that video games allow us to tap onto our id, the pleasure principle that we keep at bay during our normal life, but in games, we're able to run rampant and wantonly cause mass murder. The media frequently criticises these sorts of games for corrupting our youth, but that's really neither here nor there; whose douche parents are letting them play the games in the first place? Anyway, not to get into the censorship debate too much, we're interested purely in those games that were so obscenely violent they either evoked uproarious laughter or virulent disgust. Here are the 10 most insanely violent video games ever made.

10. Carmageddon 3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EAiBYo4aMA Granted, the thought that a racing game could make a list of the most violent video games in history seems ludicrous to those who spent an unhealthy amount of time playing the various Burnout, Need for Speed and Gran Turismo games, but those people clearly have never played the wonderful racing series Carmaggedon, which made an art out of splattering people and farm animals as violently as humanly possible, using your vehicle as a weapon. The game has a central objective that is usually winning a race, but the real fun with these games came from the secondary objective, that usually entailed killing as many aimless civilians as possible and racking up a totally badass score. Proving the developer's sense of humour, you got a bonus if you managed to splatter the guy who waves the race flag right at the start of a race. Given that the series made it to three titles, it's clear that this unique brand of violence went over well, and we can only hope that someone soon enough gets to work on a reboot that can have a multiplayer online offering.
