Video game development is something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's an anything-goes creative endeavour that can birth a title fans talk about and love for decades, but on the other, it can be a total nightmare.

Because while the end result is always a work of passion and creative ingenuity, actually getting to the finish line can be one of the most stressful experiences ever. Game development is notoriously tumultuous, and it's always trouble trying to fit every piece of the puzzle together to make for a coherent whole, managing the work created by everyone from game designers to writers, artists to QA testers.

Even worse, because it takes so long to actually create a video game, it means that plenty gets changed along the way.

The realities of time and money can see ambitions get knocked down and drastic changes made to the experience last minute, with even instant-classic knockouts like The Last of Us reportedly being something of a mess until the final few months when it all came together.

While these last-minute changes can be the death knell of a game though, sometimes they're the saving grace that turn a good title into a great one.
