20 Sexiest Video Game Girls Since 2000

The 21st century's video game lady is a far cry from her 90s equivalent...

Since the turn of the millennium, a shift has occurred in video games. It began with Metal Gear Solid in 1998, changing the focus, design and writing of games from the arcade cartoons of their origins into a decidedly more cinematic approach, which has only grown stronger as technology progressed into the following generations. Characters began having face models, experienced stage and screen actors were hired to voice characters and writing improved so much from the absurd stereotypes of your Jill sandwiches to a level parallel to most TV shows that the former soon became unrecognisable. Another aspect of gaming that has changed drastically with this shift is the approach to designing female characters. With feminism's fourth wave firmly in swing, the radical sexualisation of the female character that had been running rampant through the video game genre since the turn of the 90s came under a microscope of scorn. Demands were made for more genuine, realistic female characters, more female leads and a character-driven approach that paralleled the iconic leading men. As such, what has defined a beautiful or attractive female character in video games today is a far cry from its 90s equivalent. Suddenly, the absurd dimensions of a Tifa Lockhart or a Samus Aran have been replaced with the blend of cinematic beauty and a strong person behind the eyes, rather than in front of them. Therefore, when you're asked to select the 20 most attractive female characters of the 21st century, you find yourself digging for a perfect blend of looks and personality that lead to some choices you might not first have selected. Let's take a trip back 14 years and see where video games have gone...
