Although the world has almost ended (twice) since the beginning of the new decade, there is an abundance of great new music coming this year for those of us who are able to successfully avoid the rapture.

While there are sure to be troves of new talent putting out great pieces of work this year, I’ve chosen to focus on more seasoned artists who are due a new seminal album, either continuing a winning streak, or hopefully breaking away from their more recent work to make something great.

Whether they turn out to be commercial flops or fan favourites, these albums are sure to help shape the state of music in this next decade.

If you’d told me last year that I’d be actually looking forward to a Weezer album in 2020, I’d have shaken my head profusely and told you to go back to 2001, but with their latest offering the band seem to be ditching their dreary dad-pop and making a return to their roots.

From what we’ve heard so far in the track ‘The End of the Game’, we can expect more blistering guitars, mixed with sweet vocal melodies that were staples of the albums they released 20 years ago. It’s clear they’re having fun on this track, and are drawing heavily from their old musical inspirations For all their shortcomings, you can’t help but love Weezer for their persistence.

Frontman Rivers Cuomo has compared it to their classic Blue Album, ‘but more riffy’, and if the first single is anything to go by, it could be a return to form. Did I mention its title? ‘Van Weezer’? Incredible. We might even forget about the collab Cuomo did with B.O.B if it's good enough.
